Northwest Originals

Q 1-8

While most fruit varieties have come from Europe, the East Coast, Midwest, and eastern regions of Oregon and Washington, there are some unique varieties that have originated in our region.  These special varieties are uniquely adapted to producing good quality fruit despite our wet winters.   Many of them came from chance seedlings found by local fruit enthusiasts.

Some locally introduced Apple varieties that produce good crops for us Include Wynooche Early,a variety selected in the Aberdeen, Washington area by Howard Hughes.  In addition to early ripening, Wynooche Early is very flavorful, highly disease resistant, and keeps well for such an early apple. Following Wynooche Early in ripening time is Chehalis, a very large, yellowish green and delicious variety that was discovered near the town that bears its name. Chehalis bears abundant crops throughout the Maritime Northwest. For pears, we have Orcas, a tasty and disease-resistant variety discovered on the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound and Rescue, a large, flavorful fruit that ripens early and is also quite disease resistant.

We are fortunate to have several local peach, nectarine, and plum selections. While most peaches are plagued by Peach Leaf Curl, a nasty disease that can defoliate a tree, Oregon Curl Free, Q 1-8, and Kriebich Nectarine are locally discovered varieties that bear delicious fruit and resist attacks of this disease. Brooks Plum is a native Oregonian from Lafayette, a large, sweet, Italian type that was the mainstay of Oregon's prune industry.

In addition to fruit trees, we have active breeding programs in Corvallis that have given us superior varieties of blackberries and filberts. There is probably no place in the world that produces tastier blackberries than our own Willamette Valley. Varieties like Marionberry, Boysenberry, Chester Thornless, Silvan, and many others are prized for their delectable, flavorful fruit. The filbert tree is probably the smallest nut tree and can fit in most yards. As Oregon produces over 90% of the filberts grown in the US, our Corvallis breeding program has created many excellent, disease-resistant varieties. These include Santiam, Yamhill, Delta, and Gamma.
